‘My overall experience at Lhasa was incredibly rewarding. During my year-long placement, I gained hands-on experience in software development, which significantly enhanced my coding skills and understanding of real-world applications.’
At Lhasa, we are committed to developing and investing in future talent. Every year we offer internships within our software development team, providing students with invaluable real-world work experience. This year, we have two students from York University on board. Our internships are designed to offer vital experience to students from diverse backgrounds, helping to shape the future of Lhasa.
We spoke with Bailey Uniacke and Ishrit Thakur, two of our current placement software developers, about their time at Lhasa over the past year…
‘Taking a year in industry has been a valuable way to get quality work experience before I graduate, getting involved in a real software development environment surrounded by experts. I’ve put skills that I learned in the first two years of my degree to real-world use, like agile approach to development and unit testing, and picked up new skills that aren’t covered by my course, such as Typescript and front-end development. One of the most important perks for me has been the flexibility in working from home, which has allowed me to stay close to campus in York and come into the office near Leeds Station when I want or need to.’
– Bailey Uniacke, Placement Software Developer at Lhasa.
‘My overall experience at Lhasa was incredibly rewarding. During my year-long placement, I gained hands-on experience in software development, which significantly enhanced my coding skills and understanding of real-world applications. I worked on tasks such as developing features for the Kaptis application, alongside fixing bugs and writing unit tests to ensure software reliability. These projects helped me improve my problem-solving abilities and learn how to collaborate effectively within a team. The supportive environment at Lhasa, combined with the opportunity to work on meaningful projects, made my placement valuable leaning experience. I highly recommend a year in placement at Lhasa for anyone looking to gain practical experience, grow their technical skills, and contribute to impactful projects in a collaborative setting.’

Speaking to Luke Bryant, Relationships Manager in the Department of Computer Science at the University of York, he highlighted the significance of the partnership between York University and Lhasa and the value of the work experience it provides:
‘The Computer Science department at the University of York has been working with Lhasa for several years. We find the relationship to be hugely beneficial for all parties. For us, it allows us to place our students into an environment where they are extremely well supported and provided with a real insight into working in industry. For our students it allows them to develop their skill set and put into practice the knowledge they have gained from the first two years of their degree. We find that our placement students return with improved confidence and a better understanding of their future career path which speaks to the value of the placement year opportunities offered at Lhasa.’
We are proud to offer students the opportunity to develop transferable skills in an innovative and forward-thinking environment, preparing them for their future careers. Many of our former placement students have joined Lhasa full-time after graduation, furthering our commitment to building a diverse and inclusive team, and creating valuable opportunities for those looking to kickstart a career in tech.
